FAQ

Here are some answers that could help!

“I’m not comfortable discussing my current or expected salary. I prefer to focus on the value I can add in this position, and I look forward to hearing what you think is appropriate.” This is uncomfortable, but the discomfort is worth it! Sharing your salary expectations or your current salary is not in your best interest. More info here.

  1. What are the company’s growth plans for the next year?
  2. How much has the company grown in the past year? What %?
  3. How much is the company expected to grow in the future (e.g., next 5-10 years)?
  4. What is the last piece of employee feedback you’ve implemented?
  5. What is the average tenure of a team member?
  6. How would you describe the culture of the company (or this team)?
  7. How would you describe your management style?
  8. How do you evaluate/provide feedback (e.g., annual formal reviews)?

If they seem offended by any of the above questions, or struggle to answer—that is a red flag!

Maybe. If you’re getting an offer that is $30-100k over market, do some due diligence on the company. Most of us want to believe that we’re getting this offer because we are worth it and we are amazing—and that may be the case! But, it could also be that the company recently went public, has an influx of cash, and is being irresponsible (which could mean layoffs are a future concern). If so, proceed with caution. It doesn’t mean don’t take the job, but maybe don’t adjust your lifestyle according to the new salary just yet (maybe live the same life and put the money in the bank until you get a better idea of what’s going on with the company!)
