Meet Mahip
Mahip had originally studied law because he was chasing high earnings and prestige. However after getting a job at a big law firm, he began working long hours, under high pressure, and quickly developed symptoms of anxiety and depression.
He hated his work life, and had little time for exercising, dating, hobbies, or spending time with family or friends. He was earning a high income, but it wasn’t worth it to him.
LAWYER –> BUSINESS OWNER
He knew he didn’t want to be a lawyer anymore, but wasn’t sure what he wanted in its place. He quit his job and completed a 10-day silent Vipassana retreat (something he always wanted to do). After this experience, he became deeply interested in meditation, but didn’t know how to turn it into a career.
He decided to apply for a Ph.D. to study the impact of meditation on mental health. While was excited about his new career direction, he felt defeated by academia’s low wages, high-pressure to publish.
He longed for a position where he could create his own schedule, meditate, and have plenty of time off to bond with his son and wife, but a regular academic job wouldn’t allow for that type of flexibility.
The Impact
Mahip worked with a Career Coach to develop a plan for completing his Ph.D. and transitioning out of academia—which was scary! With the guidance of his Career Coach, he navigated essential aspects like securing his own health insurance and connecting with others who had successfully left academic careers. His Career Coach guided him on how to network effectively, which led to him landing an unpublished freelance position, for which skillfully negotiated a +20% increase on his initial compensation offer.
With the help of his Career Coach, he also reached out to local meditation professionals and collaborated with one to launch his own meditation teacher training program, attracting 60 students! Soon after, Mahip began offering individual meditation coaching to his students, and 20 signed up for personalized, 1-1 sessions with him, further boosting his monthly income. Now, Mahip enjoys a fulfilling career doing what he loves, on his own schedule, with great pay!
Anxiety! Mahip was really nervous about doing something different, quitting his job, and about being able to earn enough to financially support himself, his wife (a full-time student), and newborn son. He worked with his Career Coach to develop a plan of action (e.g., networking, business planning, marketing, etc.) and to analyze and reevaluate how he was spending his time (e.g., dedicating less time to posting about meditation on Instagram and a more time on activities that generate income).
Mahip worked with Wanderlust Careers for 6 months to navigate his career transition. He began with comprehensive Career Testing to identify career paths that aligned with his personality, interests, skills, and salary expectations. With newfound clarity on his next steps, Mahip transitioned to Career Coaching, where he collaborated with his coach to create and implement an actionable plan. To ensure he stood out professionally, he worked with Wanderlust Careers’ Professional Writing team to enhance his LinkedIn profile, resume, and professional website, making them truly shine.
